Sri Lanka’s 78th National Independence Day was commemorated at the Consulate General of Sri Lanka, bringing together a large and diverse gathering of Sri Lankans living across Cyprus.
The celebration commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka and the playing of the National Anthem, followed by religious observances. Sri Lankans representing various segments of the community participated in the event, including religious leaders of all faiths, representatives from different regions, students, members of the business community, youth organizations, and community volunteers. Religious leaders invoked blessings and offered prayers for the wellbeing of the country and its migrant workers.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General Niyas highlighted the significance of Independence Day as a moment of national reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to the values of freedom, responsibility, and service. He noted that while Sri Lanka continues to overcome recent challenges, the country has entered a new phase of national renewal.
The Consul General recalled that Sri Lanka had recently faced a serious natural disaster and expressed solidarity with affected communities. On behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan community in Cyprus, he conveyed sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Cyprus for its humanitarian contribution of EUR 100,000 towards flood relief efforts in Sri Lanka, describing it as a reflection of the strong and friendly relations between the two countries.
The address also acknowledged the guidance and blessings of religious dignitaries and commended the Sri Lankan community in Cyprus for its active role in fundraising initiatives and humanitarian support extended to Sri Lanka during times of need.
Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s current trajectory, the Consul General noted that the country has achieved economic stabilization, regained international confidence, and committed itself to clean governance, transparency, and inclusive development, with a clear focus on ensuring that progress benefits all communities.
Consul General Niyas further emphasized the role of Sri Lanka’s overseas Missions in serving citizens with professionalism, transparency, and accessibility, while strengthening people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and host countries.
Looking ahead, the Consulate General will continue to engage with the Sri Lankan community in Cyprus through consular services, outreach programmes, and initiatives aimed at supporting trade, tourism, and community cooperation.
The event concluded with expressions of appreciation to religious leaders, community representatives, volunteers, and all those who participated in the celebration, reaffirming the shared commitment to unity and national pride.
