Importance of Registering Your Child’s Birth
Birth registration is one of the most important legal steps in establishing a child’s identity. In Sri Lanka, a birth certificate is an official document that confirms a person’s identity, nationality, and date of birth.
Prenatal information
A Sri Lankan Birth Certificate is mandatory for all services throughout life. One of the most critical requirements is obtaining a passport or ETD. Without a valid birth certificate, an individual cannot apply for a Sri Lankan passport.
Failure to register a child’s birth at an early stage may also result in long-term difficulties, including challenges in accessing education, government services, and legal documentation. In addition, it may create complications in matters related to inheritance, family records, and identity verification.
Timely birth registration ensures that a child’s legal identity is protected from the beginning and prevents unnecessary administrative or legal issues in the future.
